Breathing Problems During Exercise
Using Spirometry to Test for Asthma
If you have chest tightness, cough, wheeze or shortness of breath during exercise, your doctor may perform extra tests to see if you have a type of asthma called, exercise-induced asthma or exercise-induced bronchospasm. For some people, they will only have asthma symptoms during exercise. There are many benefits to exercise, so work with your doctor to find the best management steps and treatment options for you. Diagnosing Asthma In ChildrenAt Hassenfeld Childrens Hospital at NYU Langone, pulmonologistsdoctors who treat children with lung conditionsspecialize in diagnosing asthma, a condition in which the bronchial tubes, or airways, swell and tighten. This can make it difficult for a child to take a deep breath. Asthma can appear at any age, and doctors arent entirely sure what causes it. Evidence suggests that asthma develops as a result of repeated exposure to the viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory infections, as well as to allergens and other irritants, such as pollen, dust, mold, cigarette smoke, air pollution, and pet dander, which is the dead skin shed by animals. Exposure to these triggers stimulates the accumulation of cells in the lungs called eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that helps to protect the body from foreign substances. Eosinophils release substances that inflame the airways and make them sensitive to triggers. When exposed to a trigger, the airways overreact. They become swollen and narrow and release mucus, leading to symptoms such as wheezing. An episode of severe symptoms that comes on suddenly is called an asthma attack. What Is Good Asthma CareYour doctor or nurse will tailor your asthma treatment to your symptoms. Sometimes you may need to be on higher levels of medication than at others. You should be offered:
It is also important that your GP or pharmacist teaches you how to properly use your inhaler, as this is an important part of good asthma care. If your lungs are underperforming, they will determine whether the source of the problem is asthma or something else. Its important to remember that there are different levels of asthma, so even if you are diagnosed, it may not be as severe as some other cases. Generally speaking, asthma severity ranges from 4 different levels:;
;Each requires a different level of treatment. You May Like: Is Weed Good For Asthma Using A Peak Flow MeterSome healthcare providers like to recommend a peak flow meter to anyone with a new diagnosis of asthma. It can be especially helpful in children. A peak flow meter may help them recognize the signs and symptoms of their asthma getting worse. What Is a Peak Flow Meter? A peak flow meter is a portable, inexpensive, hand-held device used to measure how air flows from your lungs in one “fast blast.” In other words, the meter measures your ability to push air out of your lungs. Who Should Use a Peak Flow Meter? Patients age 5 years and older are usually able to use a peak flow meter to help manage their asthma. Not all healthcare providers recommend peak flow meters to help children and adults manage their asthma. Many healthcare providers believe a peak flow meter may be of most help for people with moderate and severe asthma. If your asthma is mild or you do not use daily medication, a peak flow meter may not be useful for your asthma management. A peak flow meter is a helpful tool for school health staff to monitor a child’s asthma during the school day. Why Should I Measure My Flow Rate? Peak flow meter measurements can help your healthcare provider make decisions about your treatment and adjust your medicines, and the measurements also can alert you when your asthma symptoms are worsening. Tests For Other ConditionsThe doctor may also do tests for other conditions that can make asthma worse, like:

Evidence Points To Fish Oil To Fight Asthma
Fish oil may help pregnant women prevent asthma in their babies ABC7
University of Rochester Medical Center scientists have discovered new essential information about omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish oil and how they could be used for asthma patients. In a paper published in the Journal of Clinical InvestigationInsight, researchers using cell cultures from local asthma patients, found that:
Lead author Richard P. Phipps, Ph.D., the Wright Family Research Professor of Environmental Medicine, and his lab had previously shown that certain fatty acids contained in fish oil regulate the function of immune cells . They wanted to further investigate the effects on asthma. People with asthma have an imbalance between molecules that dampen inflammation and those that increase inflammation. Using steroids as treatment controls the inflammation and relieves symptoms, but does not cure the underlying disease. Funds from the National Institute of Health, the Mary Parkes Asthma Center, and the Rob Quivey Oral Biology Training Grant supported the research. Examining Link Between Fish Oil During Pregnancy And Childhood AsthmaThe researchers were led by Prof. Ken Stark, Canada Research Chair in Nutritional Lipidomics and professor in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. Prof. Stark and team selected 736 pregnant women who were 24 weeks into the gestation period. They randomly administered some of the women a daily dose of 2.4 grams of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of fish oil. The control group received a daily dose of olive oil as a placebo. The LCPUFAs included eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid . These can be found in coldwater fish and are crucial for regulating the human bodys immune response. The researchers used rapid analytical techniques to measure EPA and DHA levels in the blood of pregnant women. Prof. Stark, who led the testing procedures, explains the benefits of using such a method.
The mothers offspring formed the 2010 COPSAC cohort, and they were followed for 5 years the age at which asthma can be clinically diagnosed. During the 5-year period, researchers monitored the childrens health for asthma and persistent wheeze, as well as respiratory tract infections, asthma complications, eczema, and sensitization to allergens. What Has This Got To Do With FishFish contains omega-3 essential fatty acids. Every cell in the body, including those in the lining of the lungs, can use these essential fatty acids to make the hormones that regulate inflammation. The body uses the fatty acids in fish and fish oil to “turn off” the leukotrienes that attract white blood cells into the lungs. Fish and fish oils enhance the usefulness of inhalers. These essential nutrients increase the effectiveness of the medications zafirlukast and montelukast , which operate by reducing the immune systems response to other, “bad” fatty acids. And they even help reduce symptoms when no medication is used. Don’t Miss: How To Get Rid Of Asthma Without Inhaler Does Fish Oil Help Control Asthma Not So Much Study FindsTUESDAY, Jan. 29, 2019 — Fish oil did not improve asthma control in overweight/obese young people with uncontrolled disease, a new study shows. It included 98 participants, aged 12 to 25, who had diagnosed asthma but poor asthma control, despite using a daily inhaled corticosteroid. Three-quarters of the participants took four grams of fish oil a day for six months. The others took a soy oil placebo. Taking fish oil did not improve asthma control, as measured by a standard questionnaire, breathing tests, urgent care visits and severity of symptoms, according to the study recently published online in the journal Annals of the American Thoracic Society. “We don’t know why asthma control in obese patients is more difficult, but there is growing evidence that obesity causes systemic inflammation,” study author Dr. Jason Lang said in a journal news release. He’s an associate professor of pediatrics at Duke University in Durham, N.C. “Because the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have anti-inflammatory properties, we wanted to test whether fish oil would have therapeutic benefits for these patients,” he explained. Researchers also examined whether a variant in the gene ALOX5 affected the study results. Mutations in the gene can reduce the effectiveness of drugs that target leukotrienes, which are inflammatory molecules that play a major role in triggering asthma attacks. More information Fish Oil During Pregnancy May Reduce Risk Of Childhood AsthmaThe health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are well-known and range from lowering the risk of heart disease to protecting cognitive function. New research suggests that supplements of the unsaturated fat may have an additional benefit: they may lower the risk of childhood asthma. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the two major classes of polyunsaturated fat. They can be found in certain foods like flaxseed and fish, as well as in dietary supplements such as fish oil. So far, research has indicated that omega-3 fatty acids when consumed directly from food have a variety of health benefits. A moderate consumption of seafood has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and has also been associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline, Alzheimers disease, and dementia. A weekly consumption of at least 8 ounces of seafood by pregnant women also seems to improve health outcomes in their infants. A new study carried out by the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood research center in Denmark, in collaboration with the University of Waterloo, Canada suggests an additional health benefit: reducing the risk of childhood asthma. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that children in the United States under the age of 18 or 8.6 percent of all U.S. children currently have asthma. Don’t Miss: Do Inhaled Corticosteroids Cause Weight Gain Less Inflammation With OmegaPeople in the omega-3 group had two advantages. They had a significant drop in lung inflammation. They also walked farthest in the six-minute walking test. Side effects seen with two or three patients on each diet included diarrhea and nausea. Those problems were mild and controllable, write Matsuyama and colleagues. The researchers suggest that diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids may be a “safe and practical method for treating COPD.” Since their study was small, they call for bigger, longer studies to check their results. Why Not Just Eat FishAs more and more scientists started studying fish and fish oil as a treatment for asthma, they noticed that not every kind of fish makes asthma better. Eating salted fish increases the frequency of asthma attacks in Japanese children. In Japan, however, children are more likely to eat salted fish rather than fresh fish. Also Check: Can Allergies Cause Asthma Attacks Why Does Fish Stop Asthma AttacksThe reason fish stops asthma attacks has to do with the effect of eating fish on inflammation. Fish contains fatty acids that help the body regulate inflammation. If you have asthma, your body has a chronically unbalanced immune response to the environment. Every healthy immune system responds to dander, dust mites, pollen, and airborne chemicals. The immune system sends out a group of white blood cells known as CD4+. One group of CD4+ cells, known as Th1, ordinarily responds to an by causing the rupture of histamine sacs to cause swelling and inflammation to isolate it. Another group of CD4+ cells, known as Th2, comes along later to magnify the offending substance. People with asthma have too many Th2 cells. Their immune systems cause swelling and inflammation not just of a few cells around an inhaled airborne particle but of the entire bronchial passage. The second group of CD4+ cells even recruits more white blood cells that would ordinarily be engaged in fighting tumors and viruses to produce still more inflammation. These white blood cells secrete inflammatory leukotrienes that attract more white blood cells, making the reaction worse and worse until their supplies of attractants are suddenly exhausted, ending the attack. Exercise Induced Asthma Treatment – Omega 3 and Asthma
Amla Being an excellent source of vitamin C, amla is one of the asthma-friendly foods that you can add to your diet. Not only does it help in improving overall immunity, but due the presence of vitamin C content in it, it also helps in decreasing the inflammatory responses in the airways. This further lessens the spasms of the bronchial passages. Garlic And Ginger Known as natural antibiotics, ginger and garlic both are replete with health-benefiting properties. Their anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties could help in healing in the symptoms of asthma. You can add them to your soups and broths to reap their maximum benefits. Luckily, symptoms of ADHD in children who were short on the fatty acids as infants can be improved with supplements. One study found that EPA, specifically in high doses, was most helpful in easing symptoms . Does Omega 3 Fish Oil Help Treat Asthma SymptomsBy;;|;;Submitted On March 21, 2007 Asthma is a condition that can affect your lifestyle if not well controlled. But does natural nutrients such as fish oil or omega 3 fatty acids help treat the symptoms of asthma? Some studies have shown a benefit, while others have shown no benefit. More studies in this area will certainly help. Let’s look at a randomized, double-blind study published in medical journals in 2006 looking at exercise induced asthma and whether fish oil supplementation helps. Exercise induced asthma is a condition that can exist on its own, or can be a part of the symptoms experienced by asthmatics who’s asthma is triggered by other conditions such as allergens, respiratory infections, cold weather or other triggers. This study used fish oil capsules which contained 3.2 grams of EPA and 2.0 grams of DHA in the treatment group. The study found the following: a) There was an improvement in lung function tests to the level below which ‘exercise induced asthma’ would be diagnosed. b) The need for bronchodilator medication was reduced. These are the reliever medicatiosn used to relieve acute episodes of asthma. c) Testing of the amounts of markers of inflammation in sputum was also decrease. This was a small study, but hold some promise. More research into asthma and exercise induced asthma would be very interesting to se. Omega 3 fatty acids have certainly made it into the medical news headlines for many reasons. Recommended Reading: I Have Asthma And I Smoke Weed Is There A Vegan Alternative To Fish OilAt least 10 studies have shown that other sources of essential fatty acids reduce the production of inflammation-inducing leukotrienes, but most failed to show that taking flaxseed oil or similar products reduced the frequency of asthma attacks. The reason may be that the studies were not conducted over a sufficiently long period, not that other kinds of essential fatty acids don’t help. A clinical trial conducted at Harvard Medical School found that children on inhalers increased lung capacity by an average of 10 percent over the course of 9 months, whereas children on inhalers who were given essential fatty acids increased lung capacity an average of 23 percent. But it took nine months to get even 23 percent greater breathing capacity. Not So Fast While Most Experts Say That Eating Fatty Fish Is Good For Your Overall HealthIt’s too early to promote fish oil” for asthma relief, says;JCI;study co-author Richard P. Phipps Ph.D., professor of environmental medicine at the University of Rochester. To understand why, it helps to know a little about how this study was done. While you might assume that scientists had asthma patients eat fish for dinner or swallow fish oil supplements, that wasn’t what happened. Don’t Miss: Can Steroid Inhalers Cause Weight Gain What To Look For In An OmegaWhen choosing a fish oil supplement, youll quickly notice that they come in many different forms. Although your body has a hard time absorbing and, therefore, using ethyl esters , you can pick up pretty much any other kind, including free fatty acids , phospholipids , triglycerides , or reformed triglycerides . Although several prescription omega-3 formulas have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to lower triglycerides, over-the-counter supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Thats why its important to buy from a brand you trust or look for the seal of purity from the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s .Fish oil can also go bad. Try to find one that includes an antioxidant like vitamin E in the formulation to prevent this. You can also help avoid your fish oil capsules going rancid by keeping them away from sunlight and also choosing one packaged in darkly colored material to keep light out. Expert Reaction To Study Looking At OmegaA study published in the European Respiratory Journal looks at asthma in children and omega-3 dietary intake. Dr Prasad Nagakumar, Paediatric Respiratory Consultant, Lead for Severe Asthma, Birmingham Womens and Childrens Hospital NHS Trust, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Birmingham Clinic Trials Unit, University of Birmingham, said: In a study published in ERJ, Talaei and colleagues using data from two large birth cohorts have shown that in children aged 7 years with a specific variant in FADS gene, high dietary intake of long chain omega 3- fatty acids is associated with 51% reduction in risk of developing asthma at age 11-14.; The study population included predominantly Caucasian subjects, mostly not from lower socioeconomic status.; Few studies in the past have shown reduction in risk of offspring developing asthma when such dietary modifications are made in pregnant women or in infants.; This well-designed study provides valuable data showing that dietary modifications in certain primary school children may prevent development of asthma in them at secondary school age. Multiple studies have proven that there are very real benefits to consuming the omega-3-rich oil, including reduced risk of heart disease, psychosis, epilepsy, vision loss, Alzheimer’s, mental stress, memory loss, prostate cancer, and post-partum depression, to name a few. A new study out of Denmark has a new benefit added to the list: fish oil can reduce your child’s risk of asthma.;A team of scientists at the Danish Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood research center worked with Canadian scientists from the University of Waterloo to analyze the effects of fish oil consumption on childhood asthma. The CDC estimates that roughly 6.3 million American children suffer from asthma, a number that is rising every year. Granted, for the children who ended up developing asthma, the fish oil didn’t help to reduce the severity of their asthma symptoms. However, the research proved that fish oil supplementation can help to prevent childhood asthma. The truth is that the average North American woman doesn’t get anywhere near enough polyunsaturated fatty acids in her diet. This study only added to the mounting evidence that increasing PUFA intake is vital, even more so during pregnancy. Something as simple as taking a fish oil supplement can do wonders to protect not only your health;but that of your unborn child as well. The Need For Intervention Data
Fish Oil Benefits – Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements – Men’s Health
The study only shows correlation and not causation, however, and the researchers called for intervention studies to confirm their findings and hypothesis. Commenting independently on the studys findings, Harry Rice, PhD, VP of regulatory & scientific affairs for the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s , added to this point. While results from this cross-sectional study suggest a benefit of omega-3s for asthma control, nothing further can be said without conducting a well-controlled intervention study that includes baseline omega-3 levels in all subjects, said Dr Rice. Despite the current study not showing a difference in the omega-3 index between asthmatics and non-asthmatics, an intervention trial may very well demonstrate a benefit of omega-3 supplementation in asthmatics who have low baseline omega-3 levels.;; Read Also: What To Do When Someone Has An Asthma Attack Without Inhaler How To Get Enough Fish Oil Or OmegaWe know that fish can be a little too, well, fishy for some people to stomach. But if you are open to eating some oily types of fish like sardines, mackerel, and anchovies, aim for 1-2 servings per week. This is a moderate weekly intake that balances your need for omega-3s with the risk associated with taking in too much mercury. If upping your intake of fatty fish is simply out of the question, its probably time to consider an omega-3 supplement. If youre following a vegan or vegetarian diet, youll want to supplement with alpha linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in plants, or with algae oil. Flaxseed oil is a good option for meeting your daily needs.;Guidelines for recommended dosage differ from group to group, but the World Health Organization advises 200500 mg of combined EPA and DHA . You may see this in grams on the packaging, in which case, choose dietary supplements that offer between 0.2 and 0.5 g of the two fatty acids. High doses should only be taken under the supervision of a medical professional. And side effects of fish oil capsules may include bloody nose, heartburn, nausea, loose stools, bad breath, and belching. The most common side effect is fishy burps, but this effect can be diminished by keeping your supplement in the fridge. Qvar Vs Albuterol DifferencesQvar is a medication that belongs to a family of drugs known as corticosteroids that help to reduce inflammatory responses in the human body which cause asthma attacks. It is usually prescribed as a maintenance medication to be taken on a daily basis to help prevent asthma flare-ups. Do not use it to treat an asthma attack. Albuterol is a bronchodilator which relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs. It is considered a drug of choice for reversal of acute bronchospasm and is the most commonly prescribed inhaled beta-2 agonist. According to a 2016 randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial that involved 5- to 18-year-old suferrers with mild persistent asthma, linear growth was measured in 2 groups one group receiving albuterol and the other group receiving;beclomethasone plus albuterol. The linear growth was 1.1 cm less in both groups and there was no significant difference seen in the albuterol + beclomethasone group versus the;beclomethasone only group. In conclusion, inhaled steroids that control the underlying inflammation of asthma are taken every day, whereas albuterol is used to treat the immediate symptoms of asthma as needed. Don’t Miss: Does Allergy Cause Asthma How Does Albuterol For Copd WorkAlbuterol is a selective beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist. These receptors are present on the smooth muscle of the bronchi and, when stimulated, relax the muscle and bronchodilate the airways. Beta2-adrenergic receptor agonists also increase the flow of calcium and potassium ions through the walls of the bronchi muscle cells, which causes an imbalance of charges and relaxation of the muscle. How Does Albuterol Help Treat Asthma
Steroids for asthma and their side effects | Asthma UK
Asthma is a condition in which the airways in your lungs get narrow, swell up, produce excess mucus and complicate breathing. Albuterol is a bronchodilator that helps prevent and relieve the bronchial spasms that narrow the airways in your lungs. Albuterol relaxes the airway muscles, which can relieve symptoms including coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing. It works on the nervous system by activating the beta receptors, whose purpose is to help send signals to the smooth muscles, such as the muscles along the bronchial tubes in the lungs. Albuterol signals these muscles to relax, so that they do not spasm. Albuterol is not a cure for asthma. Extended-release tablets The extended-release version of albuterol sulfate is intended to provide relief for some of the symptoms of asthma, such as wheezing, tightness and labored breathing. It’s also not a cure, and so while taking it you may find that you still have trouble breathing. Talk to your doctor about your treatment options if your asthma symptoms persist while you’re on albuterol extended-release tablets. They may decide to prescribe other medications, such as corticosteroids, which can reduce inflammation in the airways. Albuteral and NovoLog People with diabetes can take NovoLog if they need to take albuterol for asthma. Check your blood sugar to make sure you do not have low blood sugar before taking NovoLog and do not skip meals after either dose. But “if you’re using albuterol more than twice a week, there’s something wrong with your regimen, and you need to consult a doctor,” he said.; Albuterol can be taken as a nebulized solution or as an aerosol that can be inhaled by mouth through an inhaler.; Aerosol inhaler albuterol comes in canisters designed to provide about 200 inhalations. After using the exact number of inhalations, it is important to throw the canister away, even if it still contains some liquid and continues to spray. Once the listed number of puffs has been exceeded, the inhaler may not provide the correct amount of medicine. Some inhalers come with a counter that keeps track of the number of sprays used. Short-acting beta 2-agonists are called “reliever” or “rescue” medicines because they stop asthma symptoms very quickly by opening the airways. These are the best medications for treating sudden and severe or new asthma symptoms. They work within 15 to 20 minutes and last four to six hours. They are also the medicines to use 15 to 20 minutes before exercise to prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms. If you need to use your short-acting beta 2-agonists more than twice per week, talk to your doctor. This is a sign of unstable asthma and your doctor may want to change the dose of the long-term control medicines you take. Long-acting beta-2 agonists These medications include:

How I Cured Asthma Permanently
While there is no medication that can fully cure asthma, there are two general classes of asthma medications: quick-relief and long-term control medications. Generally short-acting, inhaled bronchodilators and anti-inflammatories are used to relieve occasional mild asthma symptoms as they occur. Bronchodilators work by opening up or dilating constricted airways, while anti-inflammatories reduce inflammation. The strategy behind taking anti-inflammatories is to reduce the underlying inflammation of the airways so that the bronchi may become less hyper-reactive, making future attacks less likely. Such anti-inflammatory therapy, however, must regularly be taken to be effective. Anti-inflammatory medications function mainly by interfering with the activity and chemistry of immune cells, which cause the inflammation of the airways. Anti-inflammatory medications work by relaxing the muscles in the airways that constrict during a bronchospasm. Corticosteroids suppress the immune response. Side effects of long-term use of oral corticosteroids include weakening of bones, cataracts, and clouding of the lens of the eye. ;; Can Chyawanprash Cure AsthmaChyawanprash is very effective in respiratory disorders and helps to control the symptoms of asthma and in prevention of breathlessness. Asthma Is A Chronic Lung Disorder Which Is Caused Due To Inflammation In The Airways Here Are Some Ayurvedic Home Remedies That Could Help In Reducing The Symptoms Of Asthma And Controlling The Frequency Of Asthma AttacksAsthma is a chronic lung disorder which is caused due to inflammation in the airways. The airways become narrower and are filled with mucus, blocking the airflow which then results in short gasping breaths, recurring periods of wheezing, coughing and chest tightness. If an asthma attack is not controlled in time, it can leave a person breathless.;An attack could be triggered due to allergic reactions to irritants, or some other triggers or stimuli like dust, smoke, fumes or chemical allergens like pollen, grass.;According to The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Dr. Vasant Lad, The underlying cause of all asthmatic conditions is increased Kapha dosha in stomach. From there it moves into the lungs , trachea and bronchi. The increased kapha blocks the natural flow of air, creating spasm in the bronchial tree and resulting in asthma and wheezing. Kapha is one of the three energies or doshas responsible for maintaining balance of overall health. Ayurvedic treatments for asthma focus on wiping out the Kapha lodged in the lungs;.Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, Ayurvedic Expert and Clinical Operations and Coordination Manager at Baidyanath, tells us, Herbal remedies taken on a regular basis ;in the long run. Herbs like vasa, pushkarmula and yastimadhu have been known to control the symptoms of asthma;; Also Check: I Have Asthma Can I Smoke Weed What Causes The Link Between Gerd And AsthmaThe mechanisms behind the association arent crystal-clear, but there are a few theories. One is that if someone has GERD, aspiration of stomach acid into the airways can cause irritation there, leading to breathing difficulties or a persistent cough. If you have acid reflux and you regurgitate high enough, you can get a bronchospasm that can trigger asthma, Dr. Vaezi notes. Another theory is that acid reflux may trigger a protective nerve reflex that causes the airways to tighten in order to prevent the stomach acid from entering the lungs; this can lead to a bronchospasm;too. There isnt a single test that can definitively identify reflux as the cause of asthma-like symptoms in those with GERD. But not responding to steroids is a big red flag to consider GERD in a patient with severe asthma, notes;Kaiser Lim, MD, a consultant in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. To determine if reflux is exacerbating asthma, doctors typically consider a persons symptoms and their response to treatment. In terms of treatment, a doctor might prescribe aggressive use of acid-suppressing medication to see if the asthma-like symptoms improve, Vaezi says. Sinus infections and viral infections are also culprits.1,2 Connection Between Pnd Allergic Rhinitis And AsthmaIf you have asthma and post-nasal drip, you may be more likely to suffer from allergic rhinitis, which is an inflammation of the inner lining of your nose. You may have a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion and itching. Those with allergic rhinitis are more likely to suffer from eczema and asthma. Seasonal allergic rhinitis develops when pollen in the air irritates your system. This form of rhinitis usually happens at specific times of the year. Perennial allergic rhinitis is usually present year-round and is caused by animal dander and dust. Regardless of the type of rhinitis you suffer from, the overproduction of mucus in your nasal cavities leads to PND. The PND triggers asthma attacks. The study also suggested that the more severe a person’s asthma is, the more debilitating the sinusitis. In people with severe asthma, sinusitis seems to make the asthma symptoms harder to control. Technically, this isnt something you want to stop entirely, given that post-nasal drip helps clear out your sinuses. So, if its seasonal allergies, visit an allergist and figure out whats causing your symptoms and the best course of treatment. If you suspect you have a sinus infection, talk to your doctor to ensure a proper diagnosis. Then, consider OTC medications.$17.05 If allergies are the issue, nasal steroids like Flonase or Nasacort and long-acting antihistamines like Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec, or Xyzal can help, Dr. Parikh says. If you think reflux may be an issue, consider trying OTC stomach acid reducers, like TUMS or Pepcid, when heartburn flares up. Make some lifestyle changes.If you suspect acid reflux is behind your issue, Dr. Scangas also recommends doing your best to avoid spicy foods , eat at least two to three hours before bed, and sleep with your head elevated. However, if these changes do not help or OTC meds dont offer relief, talk to your doctor, who may be able to offer prescription medications if you have a severe form of reflux, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease . Use a saline nasal rinse.Post-nasal drip starts in your sinuses, and clearing those out with a sinus rinse can help ease up the onslaught, Dr. Parikh says. This is because it could be a sign that a more serious condition is present. Amplification Of Existing Airway DiseasesIf you already have another problem in the airways, LPR will cause you more trouble than it would somebody else. Remember when we talked above about LPR always hitting the weak spots first? If you have a pollen allergy, real asthma or something similar, then the airways are already weakened. They are prone to irritation and inflammation. Having multiple diseases can obscure that you have LPR in the first place. Some people wonder why they have such an insanely strong pollen allergy. The larynx is very close to the esophagus and any potential reflux. At the same time, our voice reacts strongly to any disturbance. So even minor inflammation can cause serious voice issues. We get the most problems when the vocal cords are inflamed, as those are the basis of our voice. But often, only the entry area of the larynx is inflamed. As long as the vocal cords are fine, this instead causes pain and trouble while speaking. The voice itself can sound mostly normal. The inflamed larynx just hinders the speaking muscles from working correctly. Also, other parts of our throat and airways are part of our voice. So even if our larynx is fine, other areas can cause trouble with speaking. Our palate, for example, is needed to create most hard;consonants;like c and p. If this area between the mouth and nose is inflamed, we will have trouble speaking. It might be harder to understand us, or we will be in pain while talking. The muscles can cause problems and can get tense from speaking. That is pretty much the same as back pain from sitting in a bad position for too long just that we have pain around the larynx and throat. Also, we need our lungs to speak. They have to deliver a sufficient and stable airflow to speak correctly. So, if reflux hits the lungs, we can have trouble with our voice as well. There are, however, many aggravators and triggers of asthma symptoms and attacks, including stress, such as the stress caused by anxious behavior. While anxiety isnt known to cause asthma, the stress caused by anxiety can aggravate asthma symptoms as well as trigger an asthma attack. Asthma is caused by a narrowing and swelling of the airways, which can also cause a production of mucus that makes it difficult to breathe. Common symptoms of asthma include difficulty breathing, as well as couching and wheezing. Some medical sources have linked the swelling of airways to inflammation, which can be triggered by an overly sensitive and reactive immune system. Because stress can suppress the bodys immune system, stress can be play a role in the degree and prevalence of asthma and its symptoms. Consequently, reducing stress can remove a common aggravator and trigger of asthma. If you look closely, however, thereâs always a reason for the attack. If you have asthma, your airways are inflamed, which makes them ultrasensitive. Inflammation can cause airways to swell, hampering your breathing. More often than not, your asthma will be more noticeable when something additional disturbs your airways, which are already inflamed. Unfortunately, triggers â agents that bring on an attack â are all around. Many different things, from viruses and dust mites to exercise and emotional distress, can set off an asthma attack. Even bacterial lung infections can trigger asthma attacks in children. Every case is different, however, and something that causes wheezing in one person may be completely harmless to another. This is the same chemical released during anallergic reaction. During an allergic reaction, it can cause swelling, itchiness, and trouble breathing. Histamine can cause the lungs to swell making the airways tighter. When their airways are tight it makes it harder to take a good breath, which can result in an asthma attack. Don’t Miss: Can Allergies Trigger Asthma How Does Humidity Affect Our Body And LungsHumidity has the largest effect on higher temperatures, increasing the feels like temperatures between 4 oC to 24 oC or more as the air temperature increases above 27 oC and humidity reaches 100%. This is also called the heat index. Humidity has 3 major effects on the body as follows; 1.; ; ; ;Regulating Core Body Temperature High humidity reduces the ability for the body to reduce the core temperature by reducing the ability to release heat through the skin. If the temperature and humidity is causing the feels like temperature to be raised above 38 oC, it can result in dehydration as the body releases water to try and decrease temperature. Low humidity causes the body to lose body heat by drawing water from the skin. This works at reducing the feels like temperature but only by a few degrees Celsius. 2.; ; ; ;Humidity Levels and Temperature in the Lungs Lower humidity levels below 30% cause a drying effect of the air inside of the lungs. This is caused if the bodys core temperature starts dropping below 36 oC, resulting in vasoconstriction in the airways to reduce heat loss. This effects the temperature in the lungs and results in drier mucus from heat loss of the body, along with the low humidity in the air in the lungs, resulting in slower mucus clearance and agitation to the airway walls causing a cough. 3.; ; ; ;Increased Pathogens or particles in the lungs;; High Humidity 1. Sometimes ones asthma gets worse when it’s very hot outside. So we asked our advocate team of respiratory therapists and asthma educators the question: Does heat have an impact on asthma? Here are their responses: Response from Theresa Cannizzarro, Respiratory Therapist: Heat is one of my biggest asthma triggers. Some asthmatics are effected more than others when it is hot outside. Generally, when it’s warmer outside heat and sunlight combine with pollutants which can set off ones asthma. Heat with humidity can also be an asthma trigger. How Does Climate Change Impact Seasonal AllergiesMany scientists and doctors think climate change is a factor behind a recent rise in allergies and extreme pollen seasons. Fueled by higher temperatures and milder winters, plants are blooming earlier and longer in some parts of the country. The extended growing season means higher levels of pollen in the air. Many people with allergies experience worse symptoms when early spring weather fluctuates between warm and cold. This is called the priming effect. When theres an early warm spell, trees and grass release a first round of pollen. The resulting allergic reaction primes a persons immune system for more severe pollen reactions later in the spring. During longer allergy seasons with high pollen counts, allergy patients may find they need to use more medication to manage symptoms. Talk with your doctor about whether you should adjust your allergy management plan or medication schedule. Find out whether allergen immunotherapy for pollen is right for you.
